MacReset Chrome Tool · macOS only

MacReset Chrome Tool — fix broken Google Chrome on Mac.

MacReset Chrome Tool is a free signed macOS .pkg that clears corrupted Chrome profiles, cached credentials, and stuck Google account state. Chrome won't launch, crashes on open, or keeps signing in as the wrong user — run the installer, Chrome rebuilds a clean profile, sign back in, done.

macOS only · destructive by design · we do not back up Chrome data

What this reset targets

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome
  • ~/Library/Caches/Google/Chrome
  • ~/Library/Preferences/com.google.Chrome.plist
  • Stuck / wrong Google account on shared Macs

Run → Chrome closes → data wiped → open Chrome → sign in again.

Chrome problems this is for

We list the symptoms so search can find us.

Chrome won’t open

Icon bounces and disappears. Usually a corrupt Chrome profile.

  • After macOS update
  • After Chrome auto-update
  • Only one user on the Mac is affected

Stuck as the wrong user

Chrome keeps signing in as an ex-staff member or a different tenant.

  • Shared Mac in an office
  • Handing laptop to someone new
  • Old Google account cached

Chrome is slow / beachballing

Too much cached junk or an old profile that’s never been cleaned.

  • Lots of extensions
  • Old browsing data
  • Admin-pushed policies

Reset for support

IT wants a consistent, destructive reset for Macs.

  • Jamf / Intune deployments
  • Multi-profile Macs
  • Re-enrolling machines

How the Chrome reset works

Same idea as the Office reset – delete the problem folders.

1

Close Chrome

Quit Google Chrome completely so files aren’t locked.

2

Delete Chrome data

Remove app support, caches and preferences under ~/Library/.

3

Reopen & sign in

Chrome recreates a fresh profile. Sign back in to your Google account.

Manual way (if you want to do it by hand)

This is basically what our pkg does. We just automate it.

1. Quit Chrome

Right-click Chrome in the Dock → Quit.

2. Delete app support

Delete ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome

3. Delete caches

Delete ~/Library/Caches/Google/Chrome

4. Delete prefs

Delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.google.Chrome.plist

We do not back up Chrome data first. That’s intentional.
