MacReset Printer Tool · macOS only

MacReset Printer Tool — final recovery reset for broken printing on Mac.

MacReset Printer Tool is a free signed macOS .pkg that performs a full system-level reset of the macOS printing subsystem. It stops CUPS, clears stuck print queues, removes all configured printers, purges broken PPD drivers, and restarts the print daemon clean — so you can rebuild from scratch.

This is the final recovery step when all other printer troubleshooting has failed.

macreset tools are built for precision recovery.
Use only when a clean printer reset is required.

What this reset targets

  • /var/spool/cups — stuck & ghost print jobs
  • /etc/cups/ppd — broken printer drivers
  • /Library/Preferences/org.cups.* — corrupted CUPS prefs
  • All configured printers on the system

Run → queues cleared → printers removed → CUPS restarted → re-add printers clean.

What the Printer Reset actually does

This tool executes a full destructive reset of the macOS printing subsystem. It is designed for permanent recovery, not basic troubleshooting.

  • Stops and restarts the CUPS print daemon
  • Deletes all queued and stuck print jobs
  • Removes every configured printer from the system
  • Purges all PPD driver definitions
  • Resets global and per-user print preferences
  • Clears hidden corruption that causes paused/offline loops

What it does not do

  • Does not uninstall printer vendor software
  • Does not affect scanners or USB devices
  • Does not modify macOS system frameworks
  • Does not back up previous printer configurations
If you need to preserve existing printer configurations, this is not the right tool. This reset is designed for full destruction and clean rebuild.

Printer problems this reset fixes

These are the exact failure modes this tool was built to recover.

Jobs stuck in processing

Print queues jam and never release.

  • Ghost jobs
  • Department queues locked
  • Nothing hits the printer

Printers refuse to delete

macOS throws errors or printers reappear after reboot.

  • Profile migration artefacts
  • Broken driver installs
  • Stale network objects

Paused / Offline loops

Printers flip between states continuously.

  • Corrupted CUPS state
  • Bad PPD matchups
  • AirPrint conflicts

IT fleet rebuilds

Used by MSPs and IT teams for deterministic resets.

  • MDM rebuilds
  • Hand-me-down Macs
  • AirPrint migrations

How the Printer Reset works

The same principle as all MacReset tools — remove broken local state and rebuild clean.

1

Stop the print system

CUPS is gracefully halted so files are not locked.

2

Destroy queues & config

Spool files, printers, PPDs and preferences are purged.

3

Restart & rebuild

CUPS is restarted and printers are re-added clean.

This process permanently removes all configured printers and queued jobs for all users on the Mac.

Manual reset (for advanced users)

These are the same core steps the automated reset performs.

1. List printers

lpstat -p

2. Remove each printer

sudo lpadmin -x <printername>

3. Clear queues & drivers

sudo rm -rf /var/spool/cups/* /etc/cups/ppd/*

4. Restart CUPS

sudo launchctl kickstart -k system/org.cups.cupsd

Manual resets often leave behind broken driver state or corrupt preferences. The automated reset exists to avoid partial failures.
